"portal" Charlie

Analysis of “portal” short film by Dan Trachtenberg

Narrative:

-       Heavy piano riff, slow piano riff this really helps represent the character rather as a prisoner as opposed to a woman.

-       We see she is treated as a prisoner and acts like a prison would, doing press ups and tallying the days as they go by, this is all done to help portrait passing time.

-       We know she is there for a reason, hence why she is fed and has the barcode on the back of her neck.

-       As you can see from the screen grab, this particular sequence is in terms of a CCTV camera, which again lets us know she is there for a reason and she is being watched.

-       The riff and the sped up footage of her occupying her time with fitness or eating and looking for a way out further entices the audience as to how she will escape, and yet portal may be a clue, but at this point in the film, it is unclear.

-       Considering the beginning and the ending of the film is starts with a woman in solitary confinement on her own with nothing to do, and no where to go. We see her escape but not to the extent of freedom. She escapes to another level of this almost game like situation.

-       The film is linear, it does follow sequence in a start to finish order, this is good as the plot is easy to follow and understand, and works a lot better as instead of the plot being altered the situation is ordered so she goes from apparent freedom, back to step one, which I think has a greater effect on the audience.

Genre:

-       In terms of genre the short allows multiple genres, which is unusual because short films tend to be either very specific or have no clear genre what so ever. Portal is mostly live action, and science fiction.

-       The audience would be mostly male, as the key things that appeal to a male are in this short, guns (of sorts) women and danger.

-       Rick Altman suggested that narrative is part of memory and relating to personal effects; this is applicable in portal as she is a prisoner and her freedom and access to personal life has been cut off.

-       This short uses codes and conventions which allow us to place it in a specific genre. Such as the location and activities, and props used (plasma cannon) this is useful as the audience can gain an expectation of what will occur in the film, but it’s when those expectations are twisted or met that people become pleased.

Audience:

-       In terms of audience the people expected to what this film would be mostly people who enjoy short films, as this channel has only two films “portal” and “the making of portal” but YouTube its-self, caters for all short film lovers as many channels are solely devoted to short films such as “north lake films” and “curio films”.

-       As mention previously in narrative, the audience will expected audience of the film would enjoy it because rather than messing around with narrative it turns the story on its head, this would please the viewers as its taking the film in an unexpected direction, we think she finally has freedom, but no.

-       The short has been showed on a variety of other websites including vimeo.com and has also been analysed by the IMDB with reviews and further production information, the short itself has over 11,000,000 views on YouTube meaning “portal” is a liked film and people are starting to hear about it, especially seeing as its been on IMBD I would say this film was a success.

-       The film itself has won no awards, but the game on which it was based on did, creating an instant fan of the film before release, as fans of the game would want to see the film interpretation.

Representation:

-       In terms of representation the character (nameless) is represented as a tough independent woman, who is capable of looking after her. This will work in synergy with the genre to help give this film more impact and attract the action audience, for example if the main character was not tough and strong and more of a damsel in distress the audience would sympathise with her rather then will her.

-       The film is perhaps comparable to the Bourne series or bond, as she is a a capable person. This will help her escape in a way, not relying on luck but talent, she is capable of escape.

-       It is hard to see any issues that the film deals with; it reflects the opposite of gender, a woman, as a stereotype would not be expected to do what she does. A woman is more feminine and not such a threat in a situation like that.

-       In terms of ideology the basic definition states that it is a state of thinking for social and singular groups, so she has the ideal skills required in the film. Dominant ideology would be appropriate to use here as she is re[presented as a female with a tough temper and no nonsense actions that allow her to  behave that she does and use her mind to help her predicament out.

Media Language:

-       In terms of shot types and shot sequence, we can see an overlay of a security camera a fast forward effect, showing her eating, working out, and looking for an escape. This helps as it shows time passing, letting us know she has been there for a while and needs to get out. Also the same technique allows the audience to know that she is being watched.

-       Another fantastic shot is used, when a part of the wall lifts up, as we can see her face, looking in In the gap in the wall, then the camera tracks backwards to let the audience see what she is looking at, of which is a plasma canon, and by extension an escape.

-       Also the shot when she breaks the mirror in order to see what is on the back of her neck, the shot type/ angle and non-diegetic sound also work in synergy, the second the barcode becomes visible a heavy piano riff Is overlaid which helps show the significance of the barcode, and the emotion on her face. This really works well as it helps add distress to the situation.

-       Also the use of framing at a sequence right at the start of the film when she stands up, the framing shows her in a room with a bed, her in medical wear and standing the middle of the room looking confused and out of touch. The camera is right against the wall this makes her look insignificant and inferior and alone.

"lovsick" Charlie

Love sick
Director: Kevin Lacey
Date of production: April 19, 2011
Where it was found and watched from: Youtube

The beginning is the resolution of a previous relationship, he then found what he thought was the girl of his dreams, and went to great lengths to follow her, it is all the stages of toderovs narrative theory in the space of three minutes. After finding “the love o his life” the original disruption occurs again, a voice over of him explaining to himself in his mind how they will last for ever, or maybe not. After the second disruption (or rejection) he then says the same again “I think she might be the one” and the story continues for a third time of him chasing after someone who will not love him back.
I chose this short film because after viewing it I thought it was a sweet film, with a message conveyed in it, the message being don’t fall in love to easily. The film started with hi ending a relationship, then he chases a new relationship almost instantly after, I exciting and creative because the film made the audience wonder if he would ever find love, as well a question pondered by the main character.
Representation:

-The social groups relevant to the film are males, females, and couples. Maybe to a very small extend teenagers. Because that teenager on the bike, and the couple in the coffee shop when it turns out that the “girl of his dreams” is in a relationship.

-The man as a stereotype, is typically “love sick” and this is represented to the audience in a very slapstick kind of way, although rather cheesy it still helps us build a solid representation of the man, in that when he sees this girl get on the train she say him staring and smiled and the man just stood there with his mouth open practically dribbling, this is very been there done that and although overdone it still is a very effective way of conveying a message of love.

-In my opinion the film is a short film who’s background is solely romantic comedy, this would have an expecting audience and therefore would help shape the characters representation, for example if someone expected to see a thriller and saw that they would have different representations of the characters but because the audience DO have an expectation they expect to see what they do.

-The film does deal with real issues but to a much more blown out of proportion extend, for example, it is seen as a very over the top stereotype to see a girl and run after her. But that is perhaps and extreme extent of the issue of falling in love. The ideology behind the media text is to wonder whether this man is going to keep falling for different girls or whether he will eventually realise what he is doing.
Narrative:

-It’s a short film therefore the narrative and plot both have to be established rapidly, this will cause the audience to make more guesses as to what is going to happen because a normal length film has one and a half + hours to go in multiple directions, where as “lovesick” only had two possible directions to go in, he gets the girl or he doesn’t, and that’s the effect of the audience, the will have to guess which way the plot will go.

-The chronology of the narrative is linear, it does jump from past to present of future, it stays as one piece of time.

-The theory of narrative for this short I think falls best into the category of a romantic comedy and nothing backs up toderrovs theory on narrative better than a romantic comedy, however the film is a short film therefore not all aspect of the film directly follow the theory, there is not enough time for the struggle to repair disruption, instead the theory for love sick goes… equilibrium, disruption, closure to one relationship and instant equilibrium again before chasing the next girl.

-The beginning of the film starts the way the film ends but turned on its head, to explain, the film begins with a girl rejecting or dumping him, however he uses a phrase “I thought we would be together for ever” then after following the second girl he says the same phrase again before a third woman runs past, and the film ends before we can see him fail a third time and use the phrase again.
Genre:

-The genre identifiable in the film Is romantic comedy, as previously mentioned short films don’t have the time that films can play with to send the message of the genre across to the audience, however the short film with the romantic comedy has to cut down the processes of genres effectiveness because of the limitation on time. Short films typically use genre as a method of giving the film a backbone and is then the director’s job to give the short film the twist that it needs so it isn’t too long but the message is still very clear throughout the film. As relatable to john fisk, The film embodies the crucial ideological concerns to the time in which they are popular while working with a time budget.

-The appeal of using genre codes and conventions are that is away of metaphorically spoon feeding the audience into knowing what the film is a bout and helping them understand key points, codes and conventions are what the audience sub consciously make sense of in order to understand any sudden change of direction of a films narrative/ plot.
Audience:

-The website (YouTube) in terms of the audiences demographic is aged between 5 years of age upwards, obviously that’s for the website YouTube, it’s not for the demographic of people watching short films, the age of demographic for people watching the short film would be between 18 and 40 of both genders slightly female majority, however the psychographic of someone watching the films are someone who is interested in romance or other short film genres, basically YouTube is a huge online database for short films, so the demographic and psychographic information for the people using the website is really wide because there are thousands of shorts on this website on thousands of channels. Mostly films lovers and media students, people of young age and general film fans.

-The audience may feel a sense of self-enjoyment as the man in the film is hopeless and consistently wonders “why it always goes wrong” maybe knowing that you as a person knows when to give up would make the audience pleased that you’re not putting yourself in that awkward position like the man is all the time, to contrast maybe the determination of the man’s ambition may cause the audience to connotes feelings towards the man that “its sweet” and nice that he doesn’t give up and romantic, however it is probably females that would connote these feelings.

-The film has been posted on numerous short film dedicated YouTube channels and on other online short film databases, also was screened and fringe film festival in 2011 where it won the critics’ choice award.

“Kevin lacy is a screenwriter and director who continuously impresses with his unique sense of style and knack for strong story telling” quote from fringe film festival blog.

initial ideas:

- in terms of camera work, very low angle panning following subject,

- match on action (dropping cigarette)
- speed altering.
- close ups to hide identity
- methods of showing distress eg. hand held camera, blindfolded camera, soft focus.
- real sense of out of the ordinary as we show routine, then a break from routine.
- heavy breathing.
- soft focus lack of glasses.

Advance production research.

Crossover:

·         Starts with an establishing shot low down to represent the size of the building this is to help the viewer’s establish where they are and start building representations already, naturally we see tall council tower we assume a lower class area, and can anticipate some violent behaviour because that is the connotation that goes with places like that. The social groups involved would be described as “chavvey” and rough and shameless.

·         Then we have a small sense of mystery as they framing and position of the camera hides the characters main features and leaves him as a silhouette. Helping ourselves to build a representation on the character, we can see from the clues around the scene so far he lives in a poor area, and there are light bulbs with no bulbs and little furniture, nothing to be proud of, but yet at the same time he takes care in what he looks like, keeping himself fit, and groomed and caring about what he’s wearing. These are all things that might give the audience a clue later on in the story.

·         The music when getting dressed suggests that he isn’t a civilised person who likes classical music, its more rough music again signifying to the audience that he might be associated with a certain crowd.

·         These people are represented in a negative way, although they have respect for each other, one of the boys earns his money through dealing drugs, and beating people up is something that is not frowned upon in those social groups thus representing them in a way that a lot of people from lower class regions of south London may be able to relate to.

·         In terms of genre it is very difficult to pin point an exact genre, however short films usually use genre as a working and adaptable point, for example a normal romantic comedy will have over an hour and a half to put the message across to the audience, however it is very hard to establish a theme in a four to five minute window.

·         Rick Altman said that people who can relate to a characters behaviour will enjoy the film more, so in the case of cross over, people who make take drugs, or shop lift, may find the story easy to relate to, not only those two associations would allow people to relate however, because people living in those areas may also find the film very easy to understand.

·         In the short film a range of shots that help us signifies more about the characters are used, for example, we know the film about the man in the body warmer, because whenever something significant happens; there is a close up on him.

·         Also in terms of camera movement there are nothing that really stands out, no extreme audience grabbing shot types, however maybe that tied in with the black and white contrast that helps the audience convey the message of the man is simple, understated and minds his own business most of the time, like he is hiding something, which might tie in with the lack of interest in the camera angle department.

·         I really enjoy the hand held camera work during the walking scene before they share a spliff, the shaky camera and constant focus pulling really suggests that one of them has something to hide, by this I mean, the adjustment of focus almost portrays a double take and co-insides with the lack of knowledge the audience has at this point, meaning they know he is hiding something, but they don’t know what.

·         There is an enigma right from the beginning, drawing the audience in expecting an answer, why the character is so reserved, makes the audience really entwined into the text and makes them ponder what the resolution of the film will be.

·         Of Corse the wrapped up truth that comes out just before the end of the film, is that they are both gay, perhaps an unexpected turn for this short film to go in as the connotations and representation, and the signifiers all represent a personal image for the two characters, tough, perhaps someone you don’t want to mess with, and fearless, that’s how they behave on the outside but on the inside, they are quite different.

·         The previous bullet point really links in with what was said earlier, on the outside they are portrayed a\s tough and not scared, however this makes it clear as to why Marion was acting so self-contained previously and now the secret is out, he was acting alternate because he didn’t want the others to know about his secret, however the phrase it takes one to know one, fits in here.

The Beggining

The beginning of our coursework starts today, future tasks consist of a 5 minutes short film, a film poster and evaluation to match. We will be using twitter as an external means of aqquiring information
